MARAEROA SCHOOLNga Kakano and Nga Mahuri Junior Team
The Junior team has 5 awesome teaching staff with a further 3 fantastic teacher aides.
We are spread across 2 big classroom spaces.
Kowhai and Harakeke, are the 0-1 in a double room which has the option of being one or two learning spaces.
Rata and Rimu, are the rest of the juniors in the giant room in the lower block. We have a cooperative learning environment, where we work together in groups. We know that 4 brains is better than 1 for solving problems, writing recounts or reading information.
Our Inquiry is based around the interests of our students. We encourage children to be curious, ask questions and want to know more. When a common theme develops, we use this to explore further.
Each day we begin Maths by focusing on number knowledge. We then work in pairs to solve problems based around the home experiences of the children and their whanau.
Our literacy sessions each day involves reading, writing and handwriting. Children work in small groups with each other, and with a teacher. When students are not working with a teacher, they are involved in activities that promote independent literacy skills, social interaction and fine motor skills.
Each term there is an art topic based around the inquiry. This usually involves visual arts. Drama, dance, and music are also covered throughout the day.
PE and Health
Students participate in school-wide PE such as swimming. Throughout the week, opportunities are provided for team games, and basic ball balls. Health is taught incidentally, covering things such as healthy food, personal hygiene i.e washing hands, keeping ourselves safe and road safety.
